Jake Dongyoung Shim gained international recognition as the recipient of the Isang Yun Prize at the ISANGYUN International Violin Competition, becoming the first laureate to perform Yun’s Violin Concerto (1992) in the final round—marking the first performance of the work in the competition’s final stage in 22 years. He later won First Prize and the Bach Prize at the 2020 Stulberg International String Competition in Michigan, was named a Laureate of the 2020 J. S. Bach Competition, received prizes at the 2020 Irving M. Klein International String Competition in San Francisco, the 2022 Zhuhai International Mozart Competition in China, and most recently won a prize at the 2022 Fritz Kreisler International Violin Competition in Vienna. He is also the First Prize winner of the Stradivarius International Violin Competition and the recipient of the Manfred Grommek-Förderpreis from the Kronberg Academy, where he made his solo debut with the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra.
In addition to winning the Isang Yun Prize and Third Prize at the 2024 ISANGYUN International Violin Competition, Shim has entered a collaboration with SONY CLASSICAL Records, which will produce and promote his debut album, currently planned for release in 2027.
Shim has appeared as a soloist with orchestras including the Baltimore Orchestra, Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin (Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra), Tongyeong Festival Orchestra, Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra, Württemberg Chamber Orchestra, and Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Central Conservatory of Music Orchestra, Chubu Philharmonic Orchestra, Seoul Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, Busan Philharmonic Orchestra, Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra, Sarah Chang & Virtuosi Orchestra, Korea Chamber Orchestra, and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.
His performances have taken him to major venues across three continents, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Alice Tully Hall, Jordan Hall, Salle des Combins at the Verbier Festival, Kumho Art Hall, Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall, and the Musikverein Wien.
An active and sought-after chamber musician, Shim has appeared at festivals such as the Verbier Festival Soloist Academy, La Jolla Music Society SummerFest, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Spring Festival (as part of the LG Chamber Music School), Perlman Music Program, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, NUME Academy & Festival, Heifetz International Music Institute’s Ashkenasi Chamber Music Seminar, Sejong Soloists’ Hic et Nunc! Music Festival, Kronberg Academy, Aspen Music Festival, and Yellow Barn. His collaborators include Benjamin Beilman, Inon Barnatan, Juho Pohjonen, Aaron Boyd, Stella Chen, Noah Bendix-Balgley, Alisa Weilerstein, Liza Ferschtman, Stefan Jackiw, Hyo Kang, Kim Kashkashian, Molly Carr, David Finckel, Wu Han, Sarah Chang, Itzhak Perlman, Gidon Kremer, Steven Isserlis, and members of the Juilliard String Quartet.
Shim currently pursues a Master’s degree at the Curtis Institute of Music, studying with Ida Kavafian, Pamela Frank, and Shmuel Ashkenasi, where he receives a full scholarship and the Tobe Amsterdam Fellowship. He previously studied with Donald Weilerstein at the New England Conservatory as a recipient of the Tan Family Education Grant and Dean’s Scholarship, with Itzhak Perlman at the Perlman Music Program, and with Kyung Sun Lee and HyunA Kim at Yewon Arts School and Seoul Arts High School.
Jake Dongyoung Shim currently performs on the 1700 “Dragonetti” Stradivarius, generously loaned by the Nippon Music Foundation.
