Hongjian Yan is currently pursuing a Master of Music Degree in Piano Performance at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he studies with André Watts. In his youth, Yan showed outstanding talent in music, winning many international competitions, under the tutelage of Hejie Zhang, Bing Han, Jiayin Li, Shuman Ren, Xiaoqing Zhong, Chen Yunjie, Wang Xin, and Florian Koltun. He completed his Bachelor’s degree at the New England Conservatory of Music with academic distinction. There, he studied with Gabriel Chodos, Alexander Korsantia, and Vivian Hornik Weilerstein. Yan has performed in concert halls around the world, including those in China, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Singapore, and the United States and a performance at the carnige hall in New York December 2023.

His many honors and awards include  winning third place at the 2021 Vienna International Music Competition (piano division), performing at the 2020 Singapore International Piano Competition opening ceremony, winning a gold medal at the 2019 Qingdao Cosmopolitan Exposition International Classical Music Festival, and winning a gold medal at the 2015 West Lake International Music Festival. He also gained the full-scholarship to participate in the prestigious and well-known piano music festival “Rebecca
Pennys Music Piano Festival” in Florida in July 2022.
