Ryo Shimakata started playing violin at the age of 5. He is currently studying at the Orchester Akademie of the Munich Philharmonic. He has recently received YAMAHA music scholarship and a scholarship as an academy student of Munich Philharmonic.

He won 1st Grand Prix in Salzburg-Mozart Intenational Chamber Music Competition in 2015 and 2nd Prize in the 69th All Japan Student Music Concours in 2012 which gained him a free-lending of a Gennaro Gagliano violin by Suntory Foundation for Arts for "the violinist with prominent sensitivity for timbre". 

He performed solo with the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra and in festivals such as International Music Festival NIPPON or Passion Art Festival in Hokkaido.

He attended masterclasses with Nora Chastain, Zakhar Bron, Pierre Amoyal, Markus Wolf, Roland Daugareil, Régis Pasquier, Nam Yun Kim, Koichiro Harada.
